Let's get something straight before we start.

"Having the best soccer drills in the world does not guarantee success"

But first, let's start with how I got here, and why I'm writing this...

It must have been about two years ago now, I was training my team and a fellow soccer coach handed me a video of soccer drills.  Billy was very excited about this video and as I respected him as a coach I watched all of it.

Now, Billy is actually someone whose opinion I trust, which is the only reason I watched the video in the first place. 

"But why isn't having hundreds of soccer drills going to help?..."

Well, let me explain. I am a qualified soccer coach and I have spent the last 8 years coaching kids soccer from 5 and 6 year olds through to adults, and I spend a lot of time trying to raise the skill levels of my players.  I have researched thoroughly trying to find some techniques and drills that would give me a complete suite of exercises to ensure that I got my team to the very best that it could be.

But, I have never been a big fan of soccer drills that have no game like characteristic .  

• What is the point of having a line of players dribbling through cones?  
  Do these dribbling drills make players look up and exploit free space?  

• Where is the value in having players practice the push pass by simply passing the ball back and forth without some movement off the ball?
  Is having a great passing technique enough for a player

• Why do so many of the drills only involve 1 or 2 players at a time?

• Why are the players not enjoying these drills?  

You can buy soccer reference books and soccer coaching manuals, but often

• The drills use out of date practices
• The drills have no game like characteristics
• The drills do not involve enough players
• The drills are not fun for players

Then, the same coaches who bought the coaching manual realize that a big list of soccer drills doesn't mean anything on its own

Only after wasting their cash and time that they see that their team hasn't improved as they thought is should, ... and then, the next soccer coaching manual comes out and the cycle repeats itself...

"What about fitness, don't players get fit enough just from training?..."

One of my favorite stories about soccer is when I was playing for Waverley City (now known as Eastern Lions, see their website at http://www.easternlions.com.au). We had a team of reasonable skill level, but were no match for nearly every other team in the league on a technical level. Because of our inferior skill level, our coach did just one thing that ensured that we performed to our optimum. Because of this one thing, we were runners up in a league where we were probably the least skilled team in that league. 
So what was the one thing that totally transformed our season?

So, you can imagine my thoughts when I got my friend's video recommending Coerver Coaching System. As I say, it was only because he was normally spot-on that I even bothered.

But, again, I have to be honest with you...,

At this point, I still thought to myself, "nice product, lots of soccer drills, this should help, ... but yet again, it just isn't going to be too practical for building a soccer team, it seems to concentrate too much on the individual... so forget it".

And that was that; I left the site... but a few days later my friend phoned me, letting me know he had seen the Coerver Coaching System being used by one of the most successful junior teams in our region and that there was a training session that we should go to. He also said that I needed to drop what I was doing and get the training session and see how it is used in a practical sense. So, off I went to see how the Coerver Coaching System was used in a real session.

Just so you know, after seeing the training session, I purchased because the Coerver Video tapes, they were not expensive and as the season had just finished I had plenty of time to review it.

So, I decided to give the system a good chance, and make full use of it... so I sat down and watch the video for an hour or two

The Coerver Coaching System will definitely produce highly skilled players, but there is more to the game than being technically brilliant.  As a soccer coach it is fundamental that you can educate your players to understand aspects of the game that are 

Not taught in the Coerver Coaching System

• How does a player know when to pass or when to dribble?

• How does a team create more scoring chances?

• How does a team restrict the oppositions scoring chances?

• Where are most goals scored from?

• How can players work most effectively as a team

• How do I get players fit enough to last a whole game out

Players need to work effectively as a  team to produce goals and to restrict the opposition

I am not talking about using specific soccer formations like  4-4-2 or a 4-4-2 or the Brazilian box, but the aspects that help promote team work and correct decision making that govern the game.

The aspects that I cover in the eBook are not hard to understand, but most coaching material ignores them and concentrates on technical skill and combination play.  Skill and team play is vital, but they do not give the players the knowledge to make good decisions when playing, nor do they help players adapt to different opposition tactics.
